Keeping pets safe this Easter
As Easter approaches, you’re probably planning how you’re going to spend the time with your friends and family. Don’t forget to think about how you’ll keep your pets safe from the many toxins that lurk through this holiday period, even in foods that are perfectly safe for us humans to consume.
Chocolate
Keep chocolate well away from your pets! Chocolate contains caffeine and a chemical called theobromine, which is toxic for our furry friends. While it’s not often fatal, it can still make your pet very unwell, causing seizures, hyperactivity, and an elevated heart rate.
Make sure the Easter Bunny leaves any chocolatey treats well out of the reach of your pets.
If you’re setting up an Easter egg hunt for your littlest loves, be sure to keep your pets well away from where eggs are hiding. Also make sure you have noted where all treats are hidden, and that they are all found before releasing your pet.
For a pet-friendly version, how about swapping easter eggs or other treats out for a pet-friendly paper token? You could even get your pet involved by hiding pet-safe treats around the yard/house.
Easter Treats
Other Easter holiday treats, such as Hot Cross Buns, are also best kept away from pets. Traditional and Chocolate varieties of Hot Cross Buns pose risks to your pet. Raisins, grapes, currants, and sultanas are all toxic foods commonly found in Hot Cross Buns, and other Easter Holiday treats. Let’s keep the buns for the human folk.
Any other treats that are lingering may include a sugar substitute, xylitol, which is another ingredient that is toxic for your pets and best kept away. Your pet will experience a sudden drop in blood sugar if they ingest xylitol. It can also lead to seizures and liver failure for your pet.
Easter Feast
Oh, the delicious feasts that always smell amazing! Don’t give in to those puppy dog eyes! If you cook with onion and garlic, your feast will not be safe for your pet. That means no leftovers for our furry friends, more for you!
